It’s an exciting week here at BRIGHT New Leaders for Ohio Schools as we open applications for our 2016 class of BRIGHT Fellows. We look forward to meeting many talented accomplished individuals as we build our next cohort of BRIGHT Fellows who share a deep belief in the potential of all children to succeed.
Perhaps you’re one of those people. Are you a passionate, proven leader? Are you inspired to apply your skills to help children trapped in poverty succeed in school and realize their full potential?
If that idea lights a fire in you, then I encourage you to apply. Our Fellows come from all walks of life and career stages, including education, business, law, nonprofits, philanthropy, military and government. BRIGHT will provide the rigorous academic foundation, leadership development and mentoring to prepare you to serve as a principal in a high-poverty public school in Ohio.
As we launch the search for our second cohort of BRIGHT Fellows, I’m so grateful to our partners – the Ohio Business Roundtable, The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business, and the Ohio Department of Education. We’ve also enjoyed strong support from state policymakers and education and business leaders across Ohio.
They’ve helped us get off to a strong start. Our inaugural fellowship class is already about one-third of the way through our rigorous 12-month program. I am so impressed by the abilities and dedication of these exceptional leaders. The 33 Fellows currently enrolled were selected from more than 850 applicants.
While they come to BRIGHT with diverse experience and viewpoints, the 2015 BRIGHT Fellows share a strong ambition for creating schools where disadvantaged young people acquire the grit, self-determination and skills needed to succeed academically. Once these children taste academic success, there are no limits to what they can achieve. That’s what BRIGHT is all about.
Right now each BRIGHT Fellow is working as part of the school’s leadership team, under the guidance of an accomplished principal, master teachers and a principal coach. In addition to this full-time job, Fellows are completing coursework towards an MBA, fully paid by BRIGHT, at the Fisher College. Fellows are also engaged in intensive leadership development, assessment and 360-feedback as well as mentoring from a business executive.
Life as a BRIGHT Fellow is demanding – and transformative. But you don’t have to take my word for it. You can hear directly from our 2015 Fellows, who took time out of their busy schedules to share their thoughts.
In viewing the videos, you might find our Fellows are just like you: passionate, courageous leaders committed to transforming our public schools and building a brighter future for thousands of children in Ohio. If that’s you, I encourage you to join us on the journey.
